Occupying a prominent town centre position, Penryn Town Hall is an important civic building and local landmark within the town’s historic streetscape. The building originated as a 17th Century market hall and was later adapted and extended in 1839 to feature a town lock-up and clock.
The building’s distinctive dome and weather vane are longstanding elements of its architectural character and contribute significantly to its presence within the townscape.
Following the deterioration of the existing structure, we were commissioned to assist with the design, detailing and delivery of replacement dome and weather vane works. The project involved careful consideration of the building’s historic character to ensure the renewed features accurately reflected the Town Hall’s architectural significance while providing a durable solution for the future.
Working alongside specialist contractors and craftspeople, the scheme secured the sensitive restoration of these prominent architectural elements, reinstating an important feature of Penryn’s townscape and preserving the building’s historic character.
The completed works demonstrate how the careful repair and renewal of individual architectural features can make a significant contribution to the ongoing conservation of Cornwall’s historic civic buildings.
This delicate conservation and refurbishment project was overseen by Roger Hocking, founding Director of CAD Architects, including input from CAD Heritage director Sam Mayou. This project is another good example of our extensive experience in conservation repair works to historic and listed buildings across the CAD brands which resulted in the establishment of CAD Heritage.
