Lametton Mill Grade II Listed Conversion of a Flour Mill

This heritage conservation project showcases the sensitive transformation of a 17th-Century Grade II Watermill, one of the few surviving examples in the region, dating back to around 1610. While many historic mills have been lost to disrepair over the centuries, this building offered a rare opportunity to restore an important piece of local history.

When the clients purchased the property, the mill was derelict, redundant, and structurally deteriorating. Their vision was to reimagine the former mill as a characterful family home while remaining true to its historic identity. Alongside the residential conversion, long-term plans were developed to restore the watercourse and original waterwheel, supporting the site’s eventual return to its former working condition.

Great care was taken to retain and repair as much historic fabric as possible, using traditional materials and original construction methods. Creative reuse of salvaged mill elements, including transforming old millstones into a bespoke dining table.

This example of heritage conservation and adaptive reuse gained national recognition when the project was featured on Grand Designs in 2021.
