Chainlocker

Grade II Listed Refurbishment

Situated alongside the town quays, historically serving as a packet station for the Royal Postal service to Spain and the Mediterranean in 1688 – two harbourfront pubs, known as Chainlocker and Shipwrights underwent a significant scope of refurbishment and alteration works including the interconnecting of both premises to form a rationalised pub, restaurant and hotel offer befitting of the site’s panoramic Falmouth view.

Formed of five phases, the earliest attributed to the formation of the 17th Century Harbour, historic research identified various alterations including Georgian and Victorian facelifts, we utilised this research to guide the process.

Due to the extent of refurbishment and significant investment required, we successfully obtained approvals for the installation of two waterfront balconies – strengthening the relationship between first floor trading pub & restaurant areas, and the busy harbour below.

We also supported construction works throughout the project – delivering and coordinating substantial structural repair works identified during the works. These required live agreement with Historic England and local Conservation Officer’s, a process requiring archaeological recording and sensitive rebuilding.

10 years on from the commencement of works, the Chainlocker continues to support the local community, boatmen and shanty singers alike.
